A university is a place of learning, but also a place of encounter. People come to universities for many different reasons. Most, of course, come as students attending classes, while others enter these spaces with entirely different purposes in mind.

From a fetishistic perspective, a women’s university can be seen as a space in which young women are able to express their physical and psychological capacities with greater boldness. At least within the university itself, the relative absence of the male gaze may allow women to reclaim a certain freedom from being watched. Perhaps this is why, on hot summer days, they can feel more at ease wearing sleeveless clothing.

In a space where women constitute the overwhelming majority, one’s appearance, clothing, and behaviour may be less subject to male scrutiny or intrusion. The environment therefore creates a different relationship between the body, self-expression, and the awareness of being observed.

Like my other mosaic works, this piece presents a women’s university not as an objective reality, but as a space reconstructed through the gaze of a male observer.
